Recent News

  • Whitespotted sawyer beetles are out and about, and they look a lot like ALB. The Massachusetts Introduced Pests Outreach Project has received numerous reports of ALB sightings this week, but all have turned out to be the sawyer beetle. ALB flies in July, so is easy to rule out right now. Learn how to tell the difference between WSS and ALB here
  • In advance of Memorial Day weekend, states across New England are asking campers and other travelers to leave their firewood at home:
  • Worcester has finally begun removal of ice storm debris (WBZ Radio 1030)
  • The town of Holden delayed ice storm debris cleanup after the federal government questioned costs that were 45% higher vs. ALB-free areas (Worcester Telegram & Gazette)
  • The Massachusetts Senate has approved an item in the 2010 budget that would require a study of the impacts of ALB. The House approved a similar study last month.

Job Opportunities:

  • The Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources is looking for a part-time worker to help with ALB outreach and surveys. Apply by 5/25.
  • The Massachusetts Asian Longhorned Beetle Cooperative Eradication Program is looking for tree climbers. Apply by 5/26.

Upcoming Events and Volunteer Opportunities:

  • Ken Gooch from the Massachusetts DCR will be speaking to the Hoosic River Watershed Association at Williams College on May 23rd.
  • Staff from the Massachusetts Asian Longhorned Beetle Cooperative Eradication Program are speaking to the students of Abby Kelley Middle School in Worcester on May 26th.
  • The Worcester Tree Campaign has organized a tree replanting event at Vernon Hill Park on June 6th
  • Worcester is seeking volunteer groups to help with the ALB tree replantings. For more information, email jennifer.forman-orth AT state.ma.us, or call 1-866-702-9938.
  • The Greater Worcester Land Trust is still looking for volunteers to assist with its ALB surveys. Surveys are about to start up again for the spring - call 508-795-3838 or email anne@gwlt.org for details. No experience is required - you will be trained on site.
  • Giving a talk or manning a booth about Asian longhorned beetle? We can help you get ID cards, pest alerts, etc. Email jennifer.forman-orth AT state.ma.us or call 617-626-1735 for details. Inquiries for events outside of Massachusetts will get forwarded to the appropriate state.
