Recent News
- A town hall meeting about Asian longhorned beetle will be held in Worcester today, Monday, Nov. 23 from 5:30pm-7pm at Quinsigamond Community College. Download a flyer here.
- USDA has made the decision to use only trunk injections to treat/protect trees from Asian longhorned beetle (Worcester Telegram and Gazette).
- Western conifer seed bugs are home-invading insects that are sometimes confused with Asian longhorned beetle. They are particularly common on the warmer days of fall. Learn more about this bug at the MIPOP blog.
- Asian longhorned beetle tree surveys were recently held in the cities of Boston and Springfield. Fortunately, no signs of ALB were detected. Local television station WWLP covered the event in Springfield, and NECN covered the rain-soaked Boston event.
- The Massachusetts ALB Cooperative Eradication Program recently held a demonstration of the fall pilot program being used to test pesticide application techniques most effective at protecting trees from ALB.
- Worcester residents that have been affected by tree removals caused by the ALB infestation are upset with a policy that calls for avoiding the placement of new trees under utility lines (Worcester Telegram & Gazette).
- New Hampshire officials have asked homeowners to be on the alert for ALB (Boston Globe).
- Vermont maple syrup producers got educated about Asian longhorned beetle and emerald ash borer (Brattleboro Reformer).
- USDA Secretary Thomas J. Vilsack recently visited Worcester where he discussed the ALB Eradication Program's request for an additional $30 million to fight the Asian longhorned beetle (Worcester Telegram and Gazette).
- Help prevent the spread of Asian longhorned beetle! If you see someone moving wood from the Worcester regulated area, call the ALB Compliance Officer at 508-799-8327.
Upcoming Events and Volunteer Opportunities:
- Now that the leaves are off the trees, this is the perfect time of year to check trees for signs of ALB damage.
- UMass Extension Amherst and Plymouth Country Cooperative Extension are sponsoring a symposium for Green Industry professionals that will include talks about ALB from UMass Extension entomologist Bob Childs and from Mass. Department of Agricultural Resources staff.
- Learn to survey for ALB and ALB tree damage with the Greater Worcester Land Trust. Volunteer crews go out most Thursdays at 12pm. Email anne AT gwlt.org for more details and to RSVP.
Past Events:
- MDAR staff recently hosted Asian longhorned beetle training sessions for the Mass. Nursery and Landscape Association. MDAR staff also spoke about ALB to the Fall River Garden Club and volunteers at the New England Wild Flower Society.
- UMass Extension entomologist Bob Childs recently spoke about ALB to concerned citizens in Belchertown, MA.
- ALB Eradication Program staff trained staff at the Department of Conservation and Recreation to detect ALB and signs of ALB tree damage.
