Recent News
- Volunteers are needed NOW to assist the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources with ALB tree surveys in the Boston and Springfield areas. The surveys are being held to train volunteers and to raise awareness about the beetle in parts of the state where ALB is more likely to show up (but hasn't yet!):
- Boston: Thursday, Sept. 17, 12pm-1:30pm, Boston Public Garden
- Springfield: Saturday, Sept. 26th, 10am-11:30am, South Springfield, meet at Gus & Paul's Deli
No experience necessary, we'll train you on site! RSVP by calling 617-626-1735 or email jennifer.forman-orth AT state.ma.us
- The Worcester Tree Initiative fall replanting campaign kicked off on September 12th with an event attended by Congressman Jim McGovern and Lt. Governor Tim Murray. Free trees and training in tree planting were provided to volunteers.
- The US Forest Service advised campers to keep an eye out for Asian Longhorned Beetle over Labor Day weekend (WBZ).
- USDA / APHIS is seeking comments on the possible regulation of interstate transport of wood packaging and firewood.
- U.S. Senator Charles Schumer will be requesting further federal funding to fight Asian longhorned beetle and emerald ash borer in New York (Adirondack Daily Enterprise).
- Forestry experts and volunteers in Maine are continuing to conduct ALB surveys (WCSH6).
Other News
- Trees for Watertown has set up poster displays around their town with information about Asian Longhorned Beetle.
- Staff members at the Museum of Science in Boston were recently trained to identify ALB and ALB tree damage. Keep an eye out for the Museum's upcoming invasive species exhibit, which will include ALB, in the butterfly garden.
- The Asian Longhorned Beetle is on Facebook. Become "frenemies" and get the latest news about ALB as it happens.
Events and Volunteer Opportunities:
- Learn to survey for ALB and ALB tree damage with the Greater Worcester Land Trust. Volunteer crews go out most Thursdays at 12pm. Email anne AT gwlt.org for more details and to RSVP.
- Watch for Asian Longhorned Beetle displays at the Big E in Springfield, September 18th through October 4th.
- A free ALB general information session will be held at Garden in the Woods in Framingham on Wednesday, November 18th, from 12:30-2pm. To register, email bdrexler AT newfs.org or call 508-877-7630 x3302
- Learn to identify ALB and ALB tree damage so that you can teach others. Organize a train-the-trainer session in your area by contacting jennifer.forman-orth AT state.ma.us
