Recent News

  • Governor Patrick officially declared August as Asian Longhorned Beetle Awareness Month in Massachusetts. The proclamation was read on August 11th at Quinsigamond Community College in Worcester. Local resident Donna Massie, the person who first reported ALB on August 1, 2008, was honored at the event. Read the Governor's proclamation here
  • The Worcester Telegram & Gazette and NECN covered the Asian Longhorned Beetle Awareness Month proclamation event in Worcester
  • The Governor of Maine also declared August as Asian Longhorned Beetle Awareness Month.
  • Concerned about the threat of the Asian longhorned beetle, Maine and New Hampshire are just two of several states in the Northeast that are conducting surveys and outreach to increase awareness.
  • The Asian Longhorned Beetle Reforestation Program plans to plant 1500 trees in the Worcester area.
  • The USDA has launched a new Asian longhorned beetle website.
  • The Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources is advising residents to be on the lookout for the Asian longhorned beetle (Boston Metro)
  • The Asian Longhorned Beetle Eradication Program has proposed testing pesticide applications on Worcester trees beginning this fall (Worcester Telegram & Gazette).
  • The Greater Worcester Land Trust has been surveying their land for signs of the Asian longhorned beetle (Worcester Telegram & Gazette).
  • Worcester is seeking to borrow money to boost tree plantings in Asian longhorned beetle-infested areas (Worcester Telegram & Gazette).

Other News

  • Staff at the Worcester EcoTarium recently gave a lecture about Asian longhorned beetle. To see what ALB tree damage looks like up close, visit the EcoTarium's Tree Canopy Walkway exhibit.
  • ALB training was recently given to Boston Natural Areas Network's Youth Conservation Corps as well as to conservation and forest industry professionals in Boston and Springfield.
  • The Massachusetts Introduced Pest Outreach Project has been conducting additional ALB outreach throughout the state, at events including:
    • Northeast Organic Farming Association Summer Conference in Amherst
    • Smokey the Bear's 65th Birthday Celebration in Uxbridge
    • Summer Gathering for Youth at the Franklin Park Zoo
    • Boston GreenFest
    • Northeast Regional Campout in Spencer
    • Farmers' Markets in Springfield and Boston

Events and Volunteer Opportunities:

  • Watch for Asian Longhorned Beetle displays at the Big E in Springfield, September 18th through October 4th.
  • ALB surveys are being scheduled now in Boston and Springfield. To volunteer, contact jennifer.forman-orth AT state.ma.us
  • The Greater Worcester Land Trust is looking for volunteers to assist with their land surveys. Next survey: Thursday, September 3rd at 12pm, Kinney Woods. Contact Anne at 508-561-1164 or anne AT gwlt.org for more info.
