The Products We Use.....

_______________

Anvil* (Sumithrin)

The product used by the Project during the early morning aerosol applications is called Anvil. Anvil is a combination of two ingredients, Sumithrin and Piperonyl Butoxide. Sumithrin is a synthetic Pyrethroid, and Piperonyl Butoxide (PPO) is a synergist which enhances the effectiveness of Sumithrin. PPO, because of this enhancement affect, allows the Project to control the adult mosquito at very low concentrations of Sumithrin. Anvil is applied from the truck (ULV Truck picture) at a vehicle speed of 10 miles per hour. Due to the extremely low dosages of the active ingredients these applications are often referred to as Ultra Low Volume or ULV applications. These treatments represent a minimal risk to humans, pets and non-target species because of the low dosage and because the Project conducts these applications early in the morning between the hours of 2 A.M. and 6:30 A.M. The active ingredient in Anvil photo-degrades rapidly in sunlight, lasting less than four hours.

Adulticiding with Anvil

The Project conducts these early morning applications from approximately Memorial Day to Labor Day and some times further into the fall. Weather and mosquito populations as well as mosquito born disease transmission threat determine the actual beginning and end of our ULV program. The time of day the applications take place is between 2 A.M. and 6:30 A.M. This period is one of the most active periods for the mosquito and conducting applications at this time allows us to control the adult mosquito with minimal risk of exposure to the public. On occasion the Project may be asked to conduct evening ULV applications in response to a heightened mosquito born disease threat.

The application equipment is mounted in the back of a ½ ton dark blue pickup truck. The applicator drives the vehicle down each street in the area to be sprayed and can control the spray from inside the vehicle via an on/off toggle switch, without needing to shut down the application equipment engine. These applications are based on public requests and/or field surveillance and/or mosquito born disease threat.

Exclusions from Spraying

If for any reason a person wishes their property to be excluded from these applications, a registered letter with the names of their property abutters has to be sent to their local Town Clerk, with a copy sent to our office. The property to be excluded also has to be marked every 50 feet with signs indicating "No Spray". Plastic plates located at eye level are recommended for these signs. Any questions about our program or the exclusion process can be directed to our office at (781) 762-3681 during business hours.
